The marketplace offers online driver education courses, in-person lessons with driving instructors, a booking system for taking student’s written and practical examinations, and car insurance. The platform works in France and Spain, with the insurance feature available only in France.
With the new funding, Ornikar plans to expand its business – they want all of the features to be expanded into more countries. Since 2013, the company has raised $175 million to date.
“In October we noticed that 80% of our new insurance customers were not coming from Ornikar but from social media, Google ads, and other outside sources. That’s why we decided to create a new business unit and explore a business as an insuretech,” said Benjamin Gaignault, Ornikar’s CEO.
The Ornikar insurance has been around since August 2020, and the company believes it will grow more since those who had never used an Ornikar service before are opting for the insurance feature.
The marketplace has changed how French people learned to drive since it was completely offline. Now, the process is easier and on average 40% cheaper to arrange.
Even in the pandemic, when many people decided not to travel and needed their personal space to get around, Ornikar saw business growing by 30% each month last year. That’s because users wanted to use their time productively with a view of driving more in the future, said Gaignault.
“Ornikar has done a tremendous job creating a great experience for students and driving instructors through engaging online education courses and a well-designed marketplace,” said Patrick Devine, director at KKR and member of the Next Generation Technology Growth investment team.
